With his debut transmission, Arcseconds’ side is a four-song suite on the theme of space crafted from eerie vocal samples, stuttering beats and computers gone haywire. Sundrips fill side 2 with the 18-minute drifter “Soft Span”, utilizing their trademark array of cascading synths, time sculpting pedal effects and tickling flickers of guitar scorch, meditating at the temple of Kosmische Musik. Available in a black on black or purple/silver sleeve.

On the a-side, Fella contributes a clanking, clattering and screeching Intonarumori styled workout crafted from piano, cymbals and guitar, climaxing in a sky-darkening drone. Erin Jane Ward (a.k.a. Les Beyond) follows up her previous Planet of the Tapes split with Silver Dapple with yet another shimmering dream-guitar soundscape entitled “Out, at Sea”, overflowing with spidery, shuffling bleeps and fittingly reminiscent of a Morse code distress call. 1. Cousins - “Nans”

Halifax’s Aaron Mangle is the musical mastermind behind Cousins, a rotating rogues gallery tossing out some of the most sophisticated slacker pop on either coast. “Nans” is the standout jam from DUZ/CUZ, the band’s 2010 split tour cassette with Duzheknew, fellow Haligonian lovers of off-kilter hooks.

2. Nü Sensae - “Cat’s Cradle”

Andrea Lukic and Daniel Pitout are Nü Sensae, a deadly Vancouver bass and drums duo hearkening back to the angriest and best bits of the 1990s underground. “Cat’s Cradle” is taken from the band’s recently released full-length, TV, Death and The Devil. Grip it and rip it!

3. Krang - “Spirit Animal”

Headaches is the ambient/experimental solo project of Landon Speers, an Edmonton expat now living in Toronto. “Accordingly To Thee” is a previously unreleased piece crafted from various musique concrète sound samples, vocal ululations and droning accordion.

Feral Children began as the solo project of Saskatoon’s Ryan Scott Davidson, a lysergic pop wunderkind gifted with Jeff Buckley-esque pipes. Recently, the project has expanded into a full-blown band, and “Brand New Wave” is the first glimpse at their upcoming full-length.

6. Silver Dapple - “Give Me Grace”

Silver Dapple is the Montreal-based shoegaze pop project of Emily Deimert (Moby Dicks, Coolies), Jesse Locke (Mount Analogue, Sudden Infant Dance Syndrome) and Markus Lake (Jane Vain and the Dark Matter, The Incandescence). “Give Me Grace” is taken from White Door by Carl, the band’s 2010 split tape with Les Beyond.

7. Blue Hawaii - “Belize”

When she’s not melting minds as a member of BRAIDS, Raphaelle Standell-Preston makes up one half of Blue Hawaii with her beatmaking boyfriend Alex Cowan. “Belize” is a beautifully breezy number from the band’s debut album Blooming Summer, released earlier this year on the almighty Arbutus Records.

8. Sean Savage - “Baby It’s You (GOBBLE GOBBLE’s Pop Manslaughter)”

“Baby It’s You” serves a two-pronged purpose with its inclusion on this compilation. The first is to showcase the vintage pop wizardry, chiming falsetto and strange charms of Sean Savage, while the second is the malfunctioning robot hypercolour remixing abilities of the one and only Cecil Frena (a.k.a. GOBBLE GOBBLE). The result is a meeting of two one-of-a-kind minds, both originally based in Edmonton.

9. Les Beyond - “Second Last Highway”

Les Beyond is the dream-guitar solo project of former Shearing Pinx axe-woman Erin Ward, now living in Montreal. This glistening instrumental first appeared on her debut release In A Gemstone, a long out-of-print CD-R from the endlessly prolific Vancouver imprint Isolated Now Waves.

10. CORSE - “iii”

Montreal’s CORSE plays improvised electroacoustic/jazz noise and consists of Phillippe Battikha on trumpet, Matthew Waddell on laptop, Etienne Lebel on trombone and sax, and Sam Vipond on drums and laptop. According to the band, “iii” is ‘the hit’.

11. Catbag - “Shakespeare in the Dark”

Montreal polymath Anthony Hansen is a writer, sound engineer, producer, frontman of the sassy synth-pop act Titus Androgynous, and as it turns out, a skilled solo artist in his own right. “Dukkha” is an exclusive contribution to this compilation, and ends the proceedings on a triumphant note imagining a 1980s cop show theme as written by Brian Eno.

Mount Analogue - Gold AK

Recorded in the spring of 2009 with thee almighty Ryan Sadler, Gold AK is Mount Analogue’s second release following the 3” CD Avant-Garbage. The 20 minute mini-album includes eight songs of abrasive Now Wave post-post-punk with a whiff of goth plus references to The Fall, DNA and Dog the Bounty Hunter. The band has been on temporary hiatus for the last year with members splitting off into other projects such as What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Stalwart Sons, Silver Dapple and Blues Dad, yet will be reuniting this summer for Calgary’s Sled Island music festival with possible future recordings to come.
